Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Quality I have used Cowboy Hardwood Charcoal many times in my Big Green Egg, with no problems. I don't know what happened to their quality control, but I bought 2 20lb. bags for a long cook on a couple of pork shoulders to make pulled pork for the 4th. I had a hard time with the charcoal because there were nothing but small and I mean small pieces in both bags. I guess I will have to go back to the brand that I was using before.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from changed I have used this charcoal for many years and i have loved it! Then i noticed " now longer lasting" lump is smaller and I can not control my burn from broasting to a nice slow smoke. just keeps burning hot like a briquet. Don't change it.. a little disappointed. otyher wise a good charcoal.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst lump charcoal I've ever tried Absolutely the worst lump I've ever tried - very small pieces and a very strong sour smell. It's hard for me to believe this is hardwood, oak, charcoal. Everything I cooked had a strong, strange flavor and the smoke coming off this lump was awful. My low and slow cook was a disaster- had to pull everything off and light another full load of charcoal.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolute Garbage Bought a 34 lb bag of Cowboy Lump Charcoal from Costco a few weeks ago. Opened it to find small stone sized chunks, the size I normally discard after a burn. Won't be buying that again, tempted to return it, save your money. ..

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Inconsistent For the most part, I am happy with this product and will continue to use but you never know what you will get from bag to bag. I have had rocks and strips of plastic (like what a plastic tarp are made of) and the lump size is completely random. Some bags contain mostly pieces the size of a wine cork while others are mainly chunks much larger than my fist. The biggest problem, however, is the variety of tree species used. I am currently working on a bag that I can't get above 450F. I don't know type of wood it is, but I can consistently peg the needle on my BGE at 750F with other bags. I even replaced the thermometer thinking that it was the problem but the new one reads the same. Different "hardwoods" burn at different temps and this stuff is all over the place. For most meals, I cook "low and slow" so this is less of a problem, but when I need to ramp it up, I never know what I will get. I've had my BGE for 17 years so it is not user error.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worse charcoal there is. I've bought bag after bag of your brand and I continue to be disappointed. I'm not even sure why I continue to waste my money. Every bag I have bought had trash in it from pieces of cans, 2x4s, wire mesh now I've found what seems to be a piece of metal tubing of some sort. When you light it, it cracks and pops and stinks. Good quality lump doesn't do any of that.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product but there were rocks in my bag I think the bag is huge for the price and I appreciate that.. I was disappointed when I noticed there were rocks.. literally rocks in the bottom of my ceramic grill. Not sure what the deal was but I have never had that issue in anything else I have bought. I was hoping I found the right charcoal for me but my concern is the rocks cracking my grill with high heat. Other than that.. the wood is good, no chemical smell for the most park and it reaches high temp..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding product Very good lump charcoal, loaded with oak and hickory smell right away while my electric heating element gets it good and hot. I have had neighbors literally walk from down the street just to ask what I cook with. Love it !

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bag of Particals Absolutely the worst bag of lump I have ever purchased. The entire bag was crushed waste and did not contain one piece bigger than a golf ball. It also appeared to be full of bark. Tried to use in the Egg and it just smoked forever and wouldn't ignite.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it... but it's lump... not crumbs!! I've always loved your product, best, hands down.. but.. last few 20# bags have been crumbs!!! Please don't make me switch!!!! BBQ pro!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Only Charcoal I Use! This is the only charcoal I use. It never gives me headaches like the processed briquets by other manufactures. It lights easily with a chimney, so no lighter fluid is needed.
