Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Flavor I recently tried this brand of lump charcoal and I’ll have to say, that I was impressed, I got a nice flavor out of it and the coals burned hotter and longer than regular briquettes. I cooked brisket and I couldn’t be happier with the results from using Cowboy lump charcoal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best lump charcoal Absolutely love the Cowboy brand lump charcoal. I have used many brands of lump charcoal and this is by far my favorite brand. It burns longer than other brands and has less rocks in it. Love the extra bit of flavor that lump charcoal gives your foods.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great Easy to light. Long lasting. Worked great in both my Weber Kettle and BGE. Its price is much better than the green bag and you get a quality product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Switching Brands I have never used lump charcoal before, I didn’t know what I was missing. So easy to use, used less product than I would have used if I used briquets. Food tasted better, and I didn’t have to add charcoal. Clean up was amZing. Cowboy Charcoal is a great product and I will use it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Lump Charcoal! I've been using Cowboy Charcoal for almost 20 years. I used to buy it by the pallet out of the Tennessee plant. For the money, you can't beat it! It adds a good smoked flavor to any meat. Weather I cook on the BGE, or one of my Weber's, Cowbow Charcoal is what I use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don’t mess with the rest, only grill with the BEST I stumbled upon Cowboy Hardwood Lump Coal a few years ago at Walmart and haven’t looked back. It lights more quickly than standard charcoal and gets to temperature just as fast. The best part about Cowboy Hardwood Lump Coal is the added flavor to the meat. Everyone always comments on the added hardwood flavor.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from NOT LUMP CHARCOAL I purchased a bag at costco and was very disapointed that it was nothing but ground up pieces of charcoal. The total bag. I have use a Big Green Egg for 17 years and if you are smoking for 10 to 12 hours it will not work. You need to improve your product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy this charcoal Bought a bag of this charcoal hoping the bad reviews were wrong. Opened it and maybe a few large pieces, the rest were so small they wouldn't even stay on the grate. Returned and got something else.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Used to Love It This was the only brand I would use for close to 7 years but recently all the bags have been filled with very small pieces and mostly dust so I have switched to a different band that's cheaper and ever better quality than what I ever got from Cowboy Brand. Sorry but you have lost a long time customer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent except when pieces are broken up in bag Here's the thing; Cowboy is by far the BEST charcoal I've ever used!!! The charcoal lights quickly and easily, the heat is easily modulated and predictable, and the coals last a long time. I've never ran out of heat before the food was done - and I've cooked for a 150 person wedding one one batch of coals. I have nothing but rave reviews for using the charcoal. But...and I'ts a BIG BUT...Sometimes the pieces are so broken up in the bag that I only get 60% of usable charcoal. It's kind of like when all the cereal is broken up into tiny little pieces in the box of rice chex. It's gotten progressively worse over the last 4 years and it's super frustrating. Having said that I now look at it like I'm paying 20-40% more for what I get. I've even resorted to squeezing the bags to see how much of the bag contains usable charcoal versus useless dust.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good charcoal but why are there stones in the bag? Bought about 7 bags and each one has had white stones in them that I keep finding when clearing out the fire pit. Spoke to a friend who recommended cowboy and he found one as well in picture below. The cynic in me thinks this is a way to get the bag to weigh more. The hopeful person in me wants to think this is scooped up in the process but hearing about others who have found various metal objects in their bags makes me concerned. The mix is inconsistent too with one bag having tiny pieces which burn way too quickly and others with large chunks only.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolutely awful I’m new to the lump charcoal game but I’ve read enough to know which way the wind is blowing. I also admit that I bought 2 bags of this thinking that it was the same as the Southern Style lump charcoal also from Cowboy. It’s not. It sparks like crazy, smells like burning oil and leaves a ton of ash. I’m going to be returning the second bag of this stuff and the remainder of the first bag will end up in the trash. I wouldn’t cook my dinner over a garbage fire, which is basically what this is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No Other Charcoal for Me! Cowboy charcoal is the best! By far! I absolutely love this charcoal. A little lighter fluid and it lights right up, ready to grill in 20-30 minutes and you can grill on it for a long, long time. A great, dependable product!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Been using it for years Just bought a new bag 4/13/18 from my local Walmart. Did a 7 LB pork butt at the typical 250-300 deg 6 hrs. I am tossing the whole roast now. Tastes like a truck tailpipe. No chemical starter used, just real oak wood chips. What happened to quality control?????

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Flavor Great easy lighting Have used this charcoal for past year, the last two bags I have found what seems to be rock mixed in the bag I even found a metal band. Way to much junk mixed into the charcoal. To bad there isn't a better quality control the charcoal itself is great I just don't like paying top dollar for rocks and metal junk

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Found slate or fire brick in my charcoal Bad quality control if they didn’t catch this. Read a couple reviews where someone found metal chunks but figured it was a one off instance but apparently foreign objects in the charcoal is more common then I thought. Both are about 4 inches long and are either slate or fire brick. Concerns me on what else could be in there.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad Product I grill every day and I make my own lump charcoal I ran out due to bad weather I didn't get more made so I bought a bag of Cowboy Lump. This stuff stinks horrible and burns with a smokey flame and you stink like a coal burning train. It also makes tons of sparks. I wrecked $15 worth of lamb due to the flames this stuff puts out. Pure Charcoal has no flames or smoke I've made tons of the stuff. Also don't call the 800 number on the bag you won't get any one just telemarketers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Legit Charcoal Without a doubt the best I've ever used. Blows the two other big brands out of the water. I will never use anything else. Long burn time. Would be great for large pieces of meat. Excellent flavor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite no matter what im cooking From smoking to grilling this is my go to charcoal. Love everything about it not sure why there can be any complaints unless your looking for fake charcoal. Lump is going to crack and smoke, its not for everyone but if you want to get as close as possible to true outdoor raw cooking the either chop down a tree lol or grab a bag of cowboy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Small Chips- lots of dust The “lumps” were more look like chips, not any moderate or large lumps. A lot of dust. Not good for use in BGE, not enough airflow because the charcoal was so small.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Crumbs What's going on with your bags of crumbs? Last 3 bags had NO wood chunks just full bags of crumbs. Do I have to go back to Royal Oak??

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Quality control Very poor quality, you get some good pieces but have the bags are small broken pieces. Shake is useless for cooking, red oak brand is way better. I bbq once week tried your brand for roasting a pig, had to use more than necessary sorry but I will not use or recommend your brand.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not enough lump I have been using this product for about a year now, I like the way it cooks and the flavor! However this last 4-5 bags have been more small pieces then lump! I pour mine in a container when first bought so I can keep it dry, and have notice the difference lately! Would love to continue to use it if there was more lump! But if not I will research other brands!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lump? I bought a 34 lb. bag of Southern Style Lump Hardwood at a local retailer a few months ago and finally opened the bag which has been sitting motionless in the garage since purchased. I'm was very disappointed to discover that the so-called lumps were no larger than an average briquet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the Lump Cowboy Lump is one of the best on the market. The first thing you will see when you open a bag is that there are big lumps included, not just shake. I like to think I do a lot of grilling and know a good product. It burns perfectly for my needs for things such as steaks, burgers and chicken. It leaves a great taste on the food which is why I like to use Cowboy Hardwood Lump.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bonus Been using another brand. The Cowboy lump burned hotter, cleaner, longer and with better aroma. The lump size was ideal and consistent. Bonus - I got a charred hammer handle in my first bag.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent for Smoking or Grilling Cowboy Lump Charcoal brings great flavor to any BBQ. I started out the night with a few T-bone steaks. The fire was going so well that I thought, why not put a little chicken on too. Delicious, if you haven't try Cowboy Charcoal you should.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best hardwood lump charcoal I've tried This has to be the best hardwood lump charcoal I've tried. Out of the bag it has some weight, with large solid pieces (other lump brands usually have tiny, almost weightless pieces). It was fast lighting in my charcoal chimney. One issue was that there was quite a lot of sparking when pouring the lit coals into the grill (it was like I lit a very large sparkler). But that quickly subsided and the grilling began. I made a Thai style whole chicken recipe I've wanted to try for a while. The bird was butterflied and marinated in a peppercorn, cilantro, soy and fish sauce marinade. It was served with a tamarind dipping sauce. It came out great. Charcoal performed very well, burning for well over an hour. It added a nice, subtle wood smoked flavor to the chicken.
